A vivacious family of five the Sorrels wanted to create a home for both large gatherings and entertaining spaces, as well as away spaces for intimacy and privacy. Green Couch Design's Remodel Design Plan provided the steps for phasing out the work, the confidence to know what elements they could take on themselves vs. what needed to be hired-out, and the assurance that their investment would serve their family for years to come.
Services: Remodel Design Plan | Time Frame: Two years of phasing the work | Total Renovation Budget: $60K |
The Sorrels had originally built what they thought was their dream home. When their children were little they loved how their open concept layout connected their family and allowed them to keep on eye on things, but as the kids grew up they found themselves on top of each other. The square footage of their open concept home was more than enough, but the function and layout was no longer working for their growing family of five. Eventually they decided to sell their newly built home and move into a 100 year old colonial - the complete opposite in layout and style!
They came to Green Couch Design (GCD) looking for guidance on how to update their historic home in a way that celebrated all it's characteristics while updating it with modern amenities. The Sorrels wanted to ensure that unlike their previous home they would not end up out growing their new one. Willing to do as much of the work themselves they needed our design plan and direction to ensure that they could get the function, look, and style they were hoping for. Through our GCD design process we were able to define The Sorrel's core values and structure their home in a way that would help best cultivate their family culture and legacy.
Design Style Profile: GCD honed in on the Sorrel's love of wood floors, granite counter tops, white cabinets, subway tile, open shelves with decorative iron details, and of course a large kitchen island. The final mood board for their home is titled; Classic Charm. It is the perfect blend of their personal style, the colonial design of their home, and their desire to create a cozy and inviting space that celebrates family, fun, and love.
Floor Plan Development: Through a series of questionnaires we were able to design around the Sorrels’ spatial needs. Their favorite activities together include playing games, cooking and eating. The goal of the remodel is to allow them to enjoy more household chores together, relax, and connect them to the outdoors.
Sealed Architectural To-scale Drawings and a Full Set of Blueprints: The new space expands an additional nine hundred square feet enlarging the house footprint from it’s original two hundred and fifty thousand square feet. It includes the following key spaces; kitchen, pantry, master bedroom, bath, and closet, laundry, mudroom, dinning room and utility closet.
Square Foot Budgeting and Task List: The Sorrel's wanted to remodel their home in phases over time. Once we defined their core values we were able to prioritize a plan for implementing the design based on their immediate needs, skillset, time, and money.
A Builder Set of Detailed Drawings for custom design elements and Sample Scripts for contacting sub-contractors: GCD put together the design plan and it was up to the Sorrels to manage the actual remodel. They could hire a general contractor to do all the work or choose to do the work themselves and hire out sub-contractors for specific pieces of the project.
